When the University of Wisconsin’s meal plan was announced to the public in late 2017, there was a lot of backlash and uproar from students and the public. Protests, Facebook groups, memes, and articles about the meal plan spread all over the internet.

As a result of student efforts the meal plan has been revised a lot. A review process for opting out of the plan due to dietary, religious reasons, or other special circumstances has been added, according to University Housing. Leftover funds not spent in the dining halls are no longer forfeited at the end of the academic year.

However, ultimately the meal plan still exists and harms many students.

Now that the shock of the announcement has settled and the first year of the meal plan is almost complete, what’s next? What does the future of the meal plan look like? I’m here to discuss why we can’t let the new meal plan be forgotten about.
